Finally… The Rock has come back… to action movies!

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Carla Gugino & Maggie Grace

Directed by: George Tillman Jr.

Screenplay by: Tony Gayton & Joe Gayton

Plot:

Upon his release from prison, ‘Driver’ (Johnson) sets out on a mission to avenge his brother’s death.

Verdict:

After proving his worth as a charming lead in family fare such as Race To Witch Mountain and The Game Plan, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson returns to the genre that kick started his acting career in director George Tillman Jr.’s latest film, Faster.

Clearly inspired by some of the second-tier revenge flicks from the 70’s, Faster refuses to apologize for effectively being an imitation of such films. With an unfussy 90min runtime, Faster whizzes by with its winningly simple plot that only takes in a few characters and barely allows its leading man to speak a line of dialogue.

Because of the films Faster is indebted to, there is no time for subtle character development or beautifully written dialogue and undeniably certain scenes including a flashback sequence are poorly put together. However there are some nice touches here including our main protagonists being simply introduced as ‘Driver’, ‘Cop’ and ‘Killer’.

Oliver Jackson-Cohen comes across slightly irritating as a flamboyant contract killer, but the excellent Billy Bob Thornton steals scenes as a nutty cop on the verge of retirement. And as expected, Dwayne Johnson comfortably fits back into the action leading man role.

Serving up plenty of violence, bad language and drug-use, Faster is a simple but enjoyable revenge flick that allows The Rock to do what he does best; lay the ‘smackdown’ to everyone and everything that gets in his way.
