What is it that makes a great movie? Is it good action? Or maybe it’s a compelling cast? Perhaps it’s a perfect storm of good storytelling mixed with believable characters sprinkled with some nice action pieces. Whatever it takes to be great, Inception delivers.
For being a fairly complex deep movie, Inception’s basic plot is simple enough. Dominic Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) plays a thief who doesn’t steal your stuff from your house, but breaks into your dreams and steals your secrets. He takes on one last job, in a effort to get his name cleared so he can return home to his kids, in where he must plant the idea into the head of a major corporations boss to dissolve his empire. Complicating his efforts are the memories of his dead wife who pops up to sabotage his efforts at almost every turn.
Now I’m not going to lie, it has taken me multiple views to truly catch the deeper meaning of this film. But I can safely say, I believe I understand this movie as a whole now. Cobb’s character is one we can all relate to in some way or another. He’s someone who has some major regrets in his past, memories he keeps in the hope of changing things. He doesn’t do his work cause he loves it, he does it for the freedom allowed to him, but more for the chance to get back home to his kids. See, he was framed for the death of his wife (uh-oh typical plot point there, but I’ll over look it for how it plays into the whole movie). Now whenever he goes into a job, goes into the dreams of a mark, the MEMORIES of his wife pop up to really ruin his day.
The story telling of this movie is really something of a epic nature. I really haven’t seen this deep or complete storytelling in a long time. Christopher Nolan is going to go down in history as one of, if not THE, greatest storytelling director/writers of our time. He’s put so much effort and thought into this that it’s hard to really knock it, but i’m going to. Phillipa as a child’s name, really? But that’s all I got on that. I think the movies are supposed to make us think at little bit, entertain by giving us a really deep rich story that stays with us after the credits have rolled.
This is a movie that really takes you for a ride. It is so rich with story and visuals. The concept behind it is just entertaining to think about and learn. This is the type of movie that you’ll watch over and over again. I would highly recommend this movie to pretty much everyone out there.
