Comedy has declined for me over the years. Nowadays you don’t get a lot of funny, watchable comedies, and it’s quite sad really. Most of these films are predictable, or those awful parodies that should’ve stopped with the Scary Movie quadrilogy.

Anyway, here’s my list of Top 10 Comedy Movies. These are the ones that I consider to be the best, so don’t get all upset if your favourite isn’t on there. It’s just my own personal opinion.

10. Mean Girls (2004) Directed by Mark Waters.

The most recent film on my list. This film may be one of the funniest movies of the decade. I can watch it again and again.

Trading Places (1983) Directed by John Landis.

Probably my favourite film starring Eddie Murphy. Back then his comic performances were amazingly funny. Sadly he’s declined since the late 90s.

9. Some Like It Hot! ( 1959) Directed by Billy Wilder.

Jack Lemmon. Tony Curtis. Dressed up as women. Marilyn Monroe playing the ukalele. What a combination. A witty script which makes me laugh so much no matter how many times I watch it.

8. See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) Directed by Arthur Hiller.

Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. Two brilliant comic actors starring together in a film is a recipe for a great comedy.

TIED.

Men In Black (1997) Directed by Barry Sonnenfield.

Will Smith. Tommy Lee Jones. Aliens. You do the math.

7.  What’s Up, Doc? (1972) Directed by Peter Bogdanovich.

Madeline Kahn’s debut film which started her career as a brilliant comic actress. A must-see.

6. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) Directed by John Hughes.

Best holiday comedy movie ever made.  No contest.

5.  Young Frankenstein (1974) Directed by Mel Brooks.

Another Gene Wilder and Madeline Kahn classic. A brilliant performance by Peter Boyle, and same to Marty Feldman. One of the funniest parody films ever made. And there’s only a couple.

4. The Naked Gun (1988) Directed by David Zucker.

Leslie Nielsen at his finest.

TIED.

High Fidelity (2000) Directed by Stephen Frears.

I love John Cusack. He makes this film jump to this place on the list. The reason it’s not any higher? The fact Jack Black plays his ususal obnoxious character, which I really dislike in this film. Thankfully he’s not in it enough to ruin it for me.

3.  Monty Python and the Life of Brian (1979) Directed by Terry Jones; Terry Gilliam.

No one can watch this movie and not laugh.  After watching Monty Python, throughout the rest of your life you’ll be quoting it and it’ll never get old.

2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974) Directed by Terry Jones; Terry Gilliam.

This film is self-explanatory.

and number 1…

1. A Fish Called Wanda (1988) Directed by Charles Crichton.

Best British comedy of all time, and my favourite comedy movie. You can do no wrong with this film. A wonderful, witty script and the actors are all perfect. Everytime I watch it, it feels like the first time, everytime.
