What a way to start off the summer movie season than with a gem like The Avengers?! The long awaited Avengers movies hit movie screens with a smash at the beginning of May 2012. All of out favorite characters are there to take us on a new adventure against a known adversary. Iron Man (aka Tony Stark), Captain America (aka Steve Rogers), Thor, Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanoff), the Hulk (aka Bruce Banner), and Hawkeye (aka Clint Barton) are all part of the line-up that is the Avengers. The first time out of the gate, the Avengers are up against a villain familiar to Avenger fans. Thor’s brother Loki has entered our world with plans of world domination that only the Avengers can stop. If only they can learn to work together that is instead of fighting with each other each chance they get. Headed up by Nick Fury of SHIELD, an international peace keeping agency, he has the awkward job of trying to unite this band of misfit super heroes while keeping the evil Loki and his army from attacking the world.
Directed and co-written by Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame, this movie is the perfect kick-off the summer movie season, which is sure to be a great one if this is a beacon of what is to come. You may be asking yourself how do make a movie with six super heroes and not have a giant mess on your hands? Well, thanks to the talents of Joss Whedon the entire movie has a smooth story line with lots of action and each hero having a specific job to do. The special effects are first class and I highly recommend you see this one in 3D, it is totally worth it! Fans of each super hero will not be disappointed with the amount of face time given to each individual.
The Avengers is a true group effort when it comes to the actors in this film. Robert Downey, Jr. (Ironman), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) all deliver excellent performances as each takes part in the dance that is The Avengers. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Furry does his best at reigning in this motley crew of heroes. I was especially impressed with the performance of Tom Hiddleston who plays the evil Loki. He is everything a villain should be: cunning, self-centered, and especially cruel. There are not any bad things I can say about this movie. It was a really wonderful experience seeing it in a full theater as everyone reacted to what was happening on the screen and applauding at the end. Go see The Avengers even if you are not a super hero fan, I can almost guarantee you will be one when you leave.
