Are you familiar with the song Crash and Burn by Savage Garden? The song ideally discusses a theme of togetherness for good or for bad come what may. Nicolas Cage did not learn the first time with GHOST RIDER back in 2007 although co –star Eva Mendez did. Instead, the action-hero (of the yester years) is adamant of going up in fire by playing Johnny Blaze the 2nd time round. It is hard to watch someone you are a fan of fail isn’t it? Since of late it is without a doubt that Nicolas Cage fans are feeling this. 2011 is not one of the best years of his career and the curtain raiser for 2012 seems to have crash and burned as well. Gone are the days where wise choices are being made it seems, it’s as if the economic crisis is effecting the big names of Hollywood. Someone or the other seems to be picking up lousy scripts putting in a few bucks into it and trying to earn some fast cash. How successful that plan worked out to be is obvious on the box office maps of GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE.
What exactly went wrong this time round? The answer is simple and it isn’t rocket science. The marvel comic Ghost Rider is considered the most supernatural hero of all. Now it is understood that movie industry is massive and is a great way to mint money (Ask Robert Downey Jr), however when you make a movie which ideally should be rated by MPAA as R in the format of PG 13 it destroys the entire concept of the comic. In simple terms it absolutely castrates the GHOST RIDER.
Mark Neveldine (Jonah Hex, Gamer) and Brian Taylor (Gamer, Crank) are known for making movies that hit rock bottom. Either they clearly lack the vision of what a good script is or somewhere down the line they overstretch the creativity making movies that should be categorized as time wasters. Not even the acting is able save GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE. Nicolas Cage and Ben Affleck need to steer clear of superhero movies; it clearly isn’t there strong suite. Idris Elba does some justice to his portrayal of Moreau and so does Ciaran Hinds with Roarke while the others merely falter at every stage to connect with the audience. Poor direction, below average characterization, CGI which is putrid GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE indeed my number one flop hit of 2012 thus far.
Johnny Blaze returns after 5 years of running from the darkness that lives inside him. Johnny Blaze who sold his soul to the devil as a youngster is haunted by The Rider. Elsewhere in Eastern Europe, Danny and his mother Nadya are being hunted down by a group of assassins. Ray who leads the group of assassins is hired by the dark lord himself to capture Danny. It seems that the dark lord has some interest in the youngster much like he had with Johnny. A lone ranger (Moreau) who is on a mission to protect Danny needs the help of the Rider, but can they dark rider find in him some element of kindness to something good for a change?
The synopsis alone sounds horrible to me; fear not the movie lives up to this in every aspect.
