The Proposal, a Mr. E Movie Review
(Run Time: 108 min. – Directed By: Anne Fletcher – Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Sandra Bullock, Betty White)
The Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds comedy, The Proposal has hit the DVD shelf with a mute chuckle. This mild comedy has quite a few good points, not too many bad points, and can be appreciated for what it is, a romantic comedy made for the masses to generically enjoy.
Margaret Tate, played by Sandra Bullock, is an uptight, tough as nails, business woman working in the publishing business. Andrew Paxton, played by Ryan Reynolds, is her loyal, hardworking executive assistant who will do just about anything to get ahead in the publishing business. Including taking Margaret’s crap day in and day out for three years.
But, when Margaret, who was born in Canada, has a snafu with the immigration department she is on the verge of losing her job to the guy she just fired when they threaten to deport her.
Thinking quick on her feet she involves her loyal assistant Andrew in a ploy that can save her job…they’re getting married! But, it’s not going to be that easy. Immigration hard on Mr. Gilbertson, played by Denis O’Hare, is going to be checking their every move.
Succeed and she stays and Andrew get promoted, fail and its deportation and jail! What to do? How about go visit Andrews parents in Alaska and start by convincing them first? This isn’t going to be pretty but it is pretty funny!
Sandra was great as the hot, hard ass boss lady. Unfortunately, Ryan steals most of her thunder in this film. He just seems to be on top of all his screen time so much so that you can’t help but to give your attention to him. Except for when Sandra ends up naked, then you can’t keep your eyes off her!
The Proposal is a recommend to be seen on DVD as it’s great entertainment for the home view but just not big enough for the big screen movie going experience, and most critics have agreed.
