The Hangover is a comedy directed by Todd Phillips(Old School, School for Scoundrels) and starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis as three friends who are throwing a bachelor party for their friend played by Justin Bartha. The three friends get the bright idea to have this bachelor party in Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s when it all starts to go wrong.

It all starts when four friends, Phil(Cooper), Stu(Helms), Alan(Galifianakis), and Doug(Bartha), get a suite at Caesers Palace then go on the roof and make a toast to a night they will never forget. Phil, Stu, and Alan wake up the next morning on the floor of their suite unable to remember anything that happened the night before. Much to their surprise their friend Doug is not in the room with them. They search the room for clues as to what they could have done last night finding a couple surprises in the bathroom and in the closet. Stu finds that he is missing a tooth, a tooth that Alan found in his pocket along with a VIP parking pass, Stu finds an ATM receipt for $800 and Phil has a hospital bracelet on his wrist. The guys decide to go to the hospital and find out why they were there, when they were there and if Doug was with them when they were there. While there they find out that they had been drugged with roofies and that they were going on about a wedding they had just left at “Best Little Chapel.” They return to the chapel to learn that Stu had gotten married and given his grandma’s holocaust ring to this complete stranger. They continue to search trying to retrace their steps in order to find their friend so they can get him back in time for his wedding. In the meantime they are getting phone calls from Doug’s soon to be wife and Stu’s girlfriend and have to cover their tracks by lying about where they are and what they are doing. Throughout the search for their friend they are attacked by various people who they were in contact with throughout the night before. How do they get out of this mess they got themselves in by simply having a good time in Las Vegas?? You’ll have to watch to find out.

The acting as a whole in the film was really good but the ones that will stand out the most are Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms. They play two completely different types of funny. Galifianakis plays the retarded and socially awkward funny where as Helms plays the real timid, nervous, and afraid of what’s going to happen funny. Galifianakis will probably be remembered as being the one that made you laugh the most…most of the laugh out loud moments for me were because of Galifianakis. Galifianakis and Helms both played characters that most people watching the film know and can probably see those people in this position. They played the characters perfectly and it never seemed forced or uncomfortable for them. The other actors did a really good job but they just won’t stand out as much as these two actors.

The script was originally written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore but according to wikipedia Jeremy Garelick and the director Todd Phillips rewrote the script adding some in my opinion very important pieces to the puzzle. It was reported that the plot was based on a real life event that happened to the friend of executive producer Chris Bender. Not sure how much truth is to that. I thought that the storyline was very creative and to an extent believable.

When it comes to comedies I’m always afraid that the director showed you all the funny stuff in the trailer. With The Hangover that was not the case. Yes you saw a lot of the funny stuff in the trailer but there are so many other funny moments in the film. It’s one of the best comedies I have seen in a very long time, it’s been a while since I laughed that hard during a film. I loved all the actors and the characters they played, some I could relate to. The film had a detective type feel to it as well which keeps you guessing and wondering what these guys have gotten themselves in to. It’s a film that I think most fans of comedy will really enjoy. I couldn’t see too many people not laughing. It’s also not a movie I could see too many women enjoying, it’s definately a guy flick with a lot of raunchy comedy and a little nudity. Overall a great comedy and a good film.
