Defenders review by Harry
Defenders was the one of the most anticipated Netflix shows. but does it deliver?
First of all if you havent seen any of the other shows you should be fine as the first episode really feels like a 0 issue for a comic book event, and sets up all the characters and leads them to a intertwining path where they inevitably meet. This is spoiler free so the only details I will reveal are ones from the trailers and those revealed at comic con.
Episode 2 is a nice filler episode with 2 real highlights. a great opening scene ( which i wont spoil) and the fight everyone was excited to see in the trailer, luke cage vs danny rand ( again no spoilers of what happens) . episode 3 is really when it starts to get kicked into high gear, where everyone finally meets up and teams up in the hallway fight that ended all the teasers. from there on it is a great show with awesome moments and reveals of each character and a plot twist at the end of episode 6 i wont spoil. But it does fall weak at the every end of the final episode as it fails to wrap up in a satisfying manner.
Every actor does a great job portraying there characters. Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock proves he is Daredevil with another great performance. But it is Krysten Ritter and Mike colter who really shine as Jessica Jones And Luke cage. With jessica stealing every scene she is in similar to drax in GOTG vol2 minus all the cartoon humour. Jessica Henwick as Colleen wing and Rosario Dawson as Claire temple all do great in ther part but it is Foggy and Karen from DD who really feel useless. Sigourney weaver’s Alexander starts off vulnerable but quickly shows us why she was cast and is a great villian in the likes of Cotton Mouth from Luke cage but sadly not vincent D’onfrio as kingpin menacing. the over arching scheme of the hand really falls flat buy the end. French gorgeous Elodie Yung redeemes her Elektra from DD season 2 and is proven to be a badass with a (spoiler) beautifuly shot and acted rebirth scene in episode 3.
Every action scene is top notch and better than Jessica jones and luke cage’s fights in their own shows. Especially Iron fist.
Most importantly the big stinkin-question: what about Iron fist?
my answer: he is redeemed and proves to be a good fighter and (thankfully) uses his fist for more than 5 mins an episode. and actor Finn Jones really shines (kinda) in this shows far superior writing/directing and its clear these daredevil season 2 show runners know how to use Iron fist way better than his own show. And his martial arts is really put on display as he ( mild spoilers but it was in the trailers so sorry) is able to keep up a fight against all other defenders without his fist.
in conclusion, defenders is a great reward for those who stuck through 2 great seasons of dd (9/10 season 1, 8.5/10 season2) on strong season of jessica Jones (8/10) and luke cage(7/10). And the dissatisfaction that was iron fist season 1.
Defenders is a great self contained show which doesnt take away anything from the previous shows but in fact only gives Iron fist and the second half of Dd season 2 more purpose. I recommend anyone a fan of these characters and shows to definitely check it out.
Final Verdict: 7.8/10
