Before I get into Avatar, I just want to make it clear that I am not here to bash James Cameron. As a matter of fact, I think he is a great director and have enjoyed his earlier films such as: The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies, and Titanic. Having said that, let’s discuss his latest film, Avatar.

Even though I wasn’t blown away when I was watching this film, I thought it was pretty good. I wouldn’t go so far as to rank it better than Titanic, but it was fine. Here are some things, which stuck out for me during this film:

• The Na’vi versus the military seemed like Apocalypto versus Robocop or Pocahontas versus Toy Story

• I thought that when Jake entered into his Na’vi body, it was a separate world like in The Matrix

• I was confused regarding the reason why the military wanted to tear down their environment for no reason

Of course, this movie is going to be a blockbuster hit as it’s either getting ready to, or already has grossed the $1 billion dollar mark.

I believe this movie is highly overrated as it’s okay, but it didn’t blow me away the way Terminator 2, True Lies, and Titanic did.

As a matter of fact, this movie reminds me of another movie, one that came out a little over 10 years ago with a lot of hype to it as well; it was called The Blair Witch Project. They kept saying how scary this movie was. Throughout the movie, I was waiting to be scared. I thought the Blair Witch was going to pop up somewhere. Yeah it was scary, about as scary as Gone With the Wind.

To me, this movie was a lot of fluff and not a lot of stuff. What I’m wondering is, if the Avatars were played by humans and not CGI, would the movie still be getting the attention it’s getting? Look at James Cameron’s Titanic; he had to add a fictional love story to the film to make it work. Once again, this film features a fictional love story.

Congratulations Mr. Cameron, your overrated film is about to, or already has topped the $1 billion dollar mark and has the chance of tying or even beating Titanic.
