A Nightmare on Elm Street

Posted on 01 June 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

The first Freddy Kruger movie to star Robert Englund and Heather Langencamp, it also helped the career of Johnny Depp.  Directed by Wes Craven this movie is Rated R for violence and language, but mostly violence.  It is an hour and thirty-one minutes long.

“One, two Freddy’s coming for you, three, four better lock your door, five, six better get a crucifix” still is haunting to this day.  The murderer of children Freddy Kruger is sentenced to death by his neighbors.  A madman born to a nun and the son of evil doers, Freddy was destined to be a bad guy.  He fashions a killing claw out of metal and knives and is burned to death because of how he has used that claw.  Now as those who killed him have children of their own Freddy begins to haunt them, killing them to get revenge for himself, killing them in an unusual and frightening way.  The only way to kill Freddy, get him while you are sleeping.  Heather Langencamp plays the main heroine, who lives near the haunted house where everything seems to begin, and return to in later movies.

Nightmare was a frightening movie for it’s day and still hold true to that.  One of the first horrors to have a recurring character that audiences love, Nightmare is one of the additions to the serial slasher.  Of course those slashers have to be invincible, like Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) and Michael Myers (Halloween), Freddy joined at jsut the right time, and had an interesting angle.  Not just a serial killer for serial killers sake, he could kill you any way he liked, not just with a knife, gun or his hands, and often surprised his victims when they least expected it.  The main character in the SAW movies could get ideas from watching Freddy work.

The action scenes are well done, there is a scene where are young woman who is thrown around a bedroom while some unseen force literally rips her apart.  Of course Johnny Depp too falls to a horrible fate and you might never look at your bed again, and of course you will never listen to music through headphones again as you fall asleep.  Inventive for it’s time Freddy surpassed Jason and Michael in the creativity of his homicide spree, and the scenes were well developed, even though a little bit overdone.

A problem with this movie is that Freddy, while frightening, is a very interesting character and spawned several follow-up movies.  This in itself isn’t a problem, but some of the sequels are so unnecessary that it lessens the power of the original character played by Robert Englund in this movie.  Also it surprised me a little how the parents reacted to the dreams and killings of their children.  I thought that the parents could have been portrayed a little better, more frightened at what is happening than angry (which is how they were written).  I also would have liked a little more history into the background of Kruger in this first movie, like his family life or why he killed children.

All in all I enjoyed this movie.  I liked the originality of the character of Freddy Krueger, and the unique way he murdered his current victims.  To anyone who hasn’t seen this movie and is a horror fan I recommend this before and of the sequels to SAW.  If you are not a horror movie fan but still enjoy a good killing every now and then, this is also a movie for you.  I don’t recommend it to anyone with a queasy stomach, or to those who have a hard time suspending reality.  It’s only a movie.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

Posted on 30 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Starring Tilda Swinton, Georgie Henley, William Moseley, Skandar Keynes and Rupert Everett, this movie is two hours and fifteen minutes long.  It is rated PG and is okay for everyone althoug some of the scenes might be too intense for children under the age of 6.

The Chronicles of Narnia is based on the series of books written by CS Lewis.  This is the first in the series of the books.  It is about a group of children who are sent to the safe haven of a professor to wait out the end of the war, and hopefully stay safe.  The movie begins with planes bombing the children and the homes around them so their mother sends them off, like many other children into the homes of strangers who are willing to give war torn children refuge.  Lucy, the youngest, discovers a wardrobe that leads to a magical land.  The land of Narnia is torn between the evil tyrrany of the white witch or the snow queen, and the protective warmth of of Aslan, the heroic lion.  All of the children enter the wardrobe, Peter (the oldest), Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, to find that they are the answer to a prophecy, a prophecy to end the reigh of the queen.  After trechory, traitors, worry, sadness, forgiveness and war things come to a head and the real winner and hero is revealed, is it Aslan, the children or the White Witch?  Well, you have to watch the movie for those answers.

This movie has a lot of computer generated scenes, and some which were not computer generated.  There are many talking animals and it is obvious that they are not really there, but this rarely takes away from the beauty and the scenery of the movie.  The action is well plotted out, even when most of those fighting are not human, and not really there.  Some of the computer generated people/animals are really well done, and sometimes surprisingly so, as was the case of the lion, Aslan.  He was well created and I wondered at one point if there was a real lion involved.

Issues I had with the movie were that one scene was not as well done as the rest.  It involved Ice and an unfreezing river.  The water was so blue that it was obvious to be that it was fake and in a tub, that scene was not as realistic as I would have hoped and made me laugh a little.  Another problem I had was the character of Lucy, the girl that played her acted quite well, but everytime she cried there were no real tears, which made it seem, well, like acting, and very insincere.  If you are going to have a character cry, at least place a few drops of water on their face so that it looks like they were actually crying.  Geez.

I reccommend this movie to a lot of people.  Children will enjoy it because it has a lot of action and animals and they can see it.  Adults will enjoy it because it is some good clean fun without swear words, plus if you read the books you might enjoy this version of the book, it is better than the cartoon version I watched when I was in grade school, and much more fun.

Kiss Kiss Bang Ban

Posted on 25 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Funny movie starring Robert Downey, Jr., Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan.  It is rated R for violence, nudity and language.  Run time is one hour and forty-three minutes long.

This is an interesting flick told by Robert Downey, Jr’s character.  Downey plays Harry Lockhart, a criminal who falls into the roll of actor, private eye, and killer.  Harry gets mixed up with things that he doesn’t understand, and it all ends somewhat bad for him, at least he loses pieces of himself along the way.  He teams up with a real private eye (played by Val Kilmer) and is supposed to be shadowing him to see how to play a private eye in an upcoming movie.  Instead he learns that things are not always as they seem.  Harry runs into the girl of his dreams, a girl he has known since he was young, and lusted after all through high school.  She learns that someone close to her is dead and asks him to help her, since she is lead to believe that he is a private eye.  Things happen quickly, several people end up losing their lives, and lots of laughs are had along the way.

In a movie that involves a lot of violence and death this was quite a funny movie.  I laughed at several of the jokes, and was happy to be laughing at jokes that didn’t involve body humor, or I should be clearer, jokes that didn’t involve farting and burping.  The action is fast paced and if you look away for too long you might miss an important part of the movie, and you might just lose what is going on in the movie.  While it tries to be something of a film noir (ex - old detective talking to the camera about how the girl walking into his office has the word trouble written on her but has lust slipping out of her lips), it doesn’t quite make it in the suspense genre.  As a comedy this movie works quite well as the jokes are fast paced.

The action in this movie is so-so, and there could have been a better detailed explanation about why things were happening or who characters were as players in the film.  There were a couple of characters that I had no idea where they came from or what their role really was in the film.  Also the reason behind some of this was a little convoluted and there seemed to be too much going on to create the story and the suspense.  I would have been fine with just one of these problems or ideas.

All in all I thought that this was a pretty good movie, although to fully understand it I am sure I will have to watch it again, although I don’t mind that.  If you dear viewer are looking for a fun comedy I suggest renting this one, as it was fun and had some really great humor.  Of course if you like violence, comedy and some suspense I totally recommend this movie to you.  If you hate to laugh don’t see this movie.  If you want a serious detective drama, again don’t see this movie.  Personally I think everyone should watch this movie, it is a little bit of joy in a genre that provides too much seriousness.

Iron Man (2008)

Posted on 25 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Gweneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, and Terrence Howard, this is the superhero movie of 2008.  It is rated PG-13 for violence, language and some sexual situations.  The movie runs at two hours and six minutes.

This movie is based on the Marvel Comic Iron Man, and if you are unfamiliar with the character or the comic no big deal, you don’t need prior history to enjoy this movie.  It is about a man, a very rich man, named Tony Stark, who owns a business that is in the business of creating weapons to end all wars.  An oxymoron I know but this seems to be the way the world works, even if we don’t want to admit it.  Tony (played by Downey Jr.) is a well off, womanizing, rich man with a sense of humor and a brain to boot.  He has the smarts and develops most of the weapons himself, which makes him a target, and he quickly becomes one, landing in the arms of a terrorist group that wants him to recreate his most devastating weapon to date.  He promises to do it while secretly building his way out, a iron man suit.  The suit becomes an obsession, and eventually the design falls into the wrong hands, leading to a superhero/supervillain standoff.

One of the better superhero comic book movies, I liked this a lot.  Robert Downey, Jr. plays a very human superhero with some major and minor problems.  He is also a very likable superhero, who while at times seems full of himself, is really funny and not as full of himself as he acts.  While every superhero has a quality about him that makes him likable and even more human, Iron Man has a quality that makes him human because if his went wrong it would kill him.

The attraction between Paltrow’s character and Downey’s is understated but it adds an element of humor as well.  I did have a problem with how weak her character seemed at one point in the movie, almost a stereotypical woman from like the fifties, but most of the problem was that she switched from strong to weak almost at the drop of a needle.  Her character was the one I had the most problem with, also I didn’t quite believe Jeff Bridges as the villain, but is could be because I kept seeing him as “The Dude” with long hair and alcohol coursing  through his veins.

I recommend that anyone seeing this movie in the theatre stays until the end as there is a little bit of a surprise after all of the credits.  This movie is a set up for the sequel which reportedly will be coming out in 2010, and starring all of the same cast.  I recommend this movie to all those who love comic books, and all those who wish that the world had real superheros.

Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte

Posted on 25 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Bette Davis could never have been classified as a classic movie beauty, yet there is something about her, something beautiful and ominous.  If looks could kill her’s would.  Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte is in the same vein as What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?  This movie is rated R for violence, language and supbtance usage.  It is two hours and eleven minutes long.  As well as Bette Davis it stars Bruce Dern, Agnes Moorehead, Joseph Cotton and Olivia de Havilland.

Bette Davis plays Charlotte, a young sociallite who is in love and having an affair with a married man.  The married man, John, has told her that he would run away with her, but her father has interviened and told him to break it off with Charlotte.  In the end John ends up dead under mysterious circumstances, considered homicide, but no one is ever charged with his murder, although ever one suspects sweet Charlotte murdered him.  Years later and she is living in the same house, which the city is in the process of tearing up, of course they may just have to do it over her dead body.  Haunted by images of her lost lover Charlotte begins to see things and feels herself spiriling towards insanity.  Lost relative Miriam comes to Charlottes rescue, hoping to help her through this trying time, and maybe get her hand on some of the family money.  Deeper and deeper towards insanity Charlotte creeps, until finally it seems to break her, however there are strange things at work, and maybe Charlotte isn’t as crazy as she thinks.

Bette Davis plays a great suspect turned victim turned suspect again.  Her acting is wonderful and delightful, the viewer can almost feel her pain and believes that she might actually be crazy.  The scenery for the movie is quite, set in a large mansion, which helps set the scene of this suspensful thriller.  Although I am pretty sure that this same hosue is used in several other movies, least notible the movie Frogs, which is a cult classic, but is very dull in reality.

An issue I had with this movie was that the beginning was a little long.  You go almost an hour and a half without much action besides the murder of John.  Understandibly movies from the earlier days do not rely on computer graphics and over the top stunts, but the characters seem to lose a little bit after a half hour, and I forgot who was who and stopped paying attention for a short while.  So if you can’t sit and actually pay attention then this might not be a movie for you.  If you are into computer animation and stunts that make you ponder the ability of the human body to take care of itself, then again this movie is not for you.

If, however, you want a down to earth thriller, with a suspensful ending, and actors that actually act, then this is the movie for you.  I reccommend that everyone see it though because unti you watch the old stuff you can never really appreciate some of the new stuff.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane

Posted on 25 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Starring a young Jodie Foster and Martin Sheen before his Apocolypse Now fame.  It can be found in unrated form, and has lots of perverted sexuality, some blood, and a tiny bit of nudity (which is not actuallu Jodie Foster for all those who wonder after watching it).  It has a run time of an hour and thirty-two minutes.

Jodie Foster stars as Rynn, a precarious little  girl of thirteen.  She is living in a house that is leased from a nosy woman named Hallet who barges in on Rynn when ever she chooses, pushing the girl to see her father and to maintain the house the way she has had is set up for what must have been years.  Mrs. Hallets son, Frank, takes an uncomfortable interest in Rynn, visiting without calling and he too barges in, just like his mother.  Frank is known in the town as a pervert and it is obvious that he has perverted ideas about what he and Rynn should be doing.  Rynn makes just on friend, Mario, a crippled magician.  He become somewhat of a savior to Rynn who is dealing with things no thirteen year old should be dealing with.  She has to keep her house safe, and the secrets within.

After seeing Jodie Foster in another dramatic role as a teenage prostitute a viewer can’t be surprised at how well she plays the role of a victim as well as a tragic hero at such a young age.  Martin Sheen plays a  wonderful bad guy and you know he will either meet bad ends or will see to it that the young Jodie Foster does.  Fear and suspense hold this movie tightly together and as a viewer I felt myself on the edge of my seat at least three times hoping that Foster and her secrets remain safe.  Of course the movie has a lot to do with lonliness and how to deal with being left alone, but the circumstances around Foster’s character are even more tragic because she either did not know what she was doing, or was left to her own devices by circumstances unseen.

My main problem was the ending of this movie.  This is one movie that I wanted to know what happened three years later in, and was hoping to get some revelation into.  Especially when you see what Foster’s character has to resort to at the end of the movie, to save herself and keep her secrets.  Does she become a well adjusted adult, or does she end up in some dark institution?

If you are looking for a quiet dramatic suspense movie, I think this is the one for you.  Just understand that there really aren’t any surprises and be prepared to have strong feelings towards at least one of the characters.

The Brave One

Posted on 05 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

The Brave One is rated R for violence and some nudity.  It is two hours and two minutes long.  Stars Jodie Foster, Terrence Howards and Naveen Andrews.

Vengence is mine saieth Jodie Foster in a movie about citywide violence and revenge.  Erica Bain is a radio talk show host and she does all the talking.  She describes walking the city of New York and all the wonderful things that the city has to offer.  Then one night on a walk with her fiancee and her dog they get ambushed.  Both are severly beaten and the fiancee (played by Naveen Andrews) is murdered.  She is in the hospital for three weeks.  After this time gets a little skewed but the movie moves on quite well.  Erica gets a gun and a vigalantee is born.  A modern day Charles Bronson in Death Wish, and for the female of the species too.  Go girl.  Terrence Howard plays a straight detective who is befriended by Jodie Fosters character.  In the end he has to make a decision that will affect her life and possibly his own.

For all those who didn’t like this movie I say I understand but Boo.  I thought this was a pretty okay movie.  The action was a little slow but the character of Erica Bain made you feel her pain enough so that you wish you had her tormented courage to go and get justice for those who might never see it otherwise.  There are several ways this movie could have gone, a Death Wise Remake or a Vigalante is Good story, but neither of those happened.  Jodie Fosters character is so tormented by what she does, but she knows she can’t stop, at least not until justice is served for her and her dead fiancee.  You feel sorry for her, but also scared and a little disgusted.  Terrence Howard gives another fine performance here and you feel for him as a tormented cop, who knows right from wrong and it tortured by the fact that he always has to uphold the “right” end of things.

My only real problem with this movie was that at times it was a little slow, and the beginning seemed to drag on a little bit.  I was wondering when we would get to the meat of the story when all we were getting was the happy life of a radio host/dj.  I thought the action scenes could have started a little earlier.  I wanted to see more of the damage, and a little more of the life of Terrence Howards character, who I felt we didn’t get enough information on to form a real opinion.  Like why did him and his wife divorce?  Was it because he was a good cop?

I reccomend people watch this movie and wonder why there aren’t many vigalantees out there in the world.  With so much crime and injustice, is this movie a tip of an iceberg that is on the point of melting or falling apart.  Then again people probably asked the same questions about Death Wish.  This is a good movie, with an excellent performance by Terrance Howard and Jodie Foster.  Interesting.

Poseidon (2006)

Posted on 05 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Movie rating PG-13 for scenes of panic and terror (yeah that’s what it said it was rated for).  It is an hour and twenty-three minutes long.  It stars Kurt Russell, Emmy Rosum and Josh Lucas.

Poseidon is a remake of an original, which seems to be a habit among hollywood.  Take a film that was fine in the first place and make another, more technically advanced and enhanced version, and hope that it out performs the original.  The plot hasn’t changed, but teh cast of characters has.  There is no old couple who each take turns to death.  There is no young fresh Sally Field character which keeps the cast interesting as you wonder who will be her hero.  There is no Gene Hackman, well actually that isn’t true, Kurt Russell takes the role of hero with tragic ends.  This movie, for those of you who have never seen the original, is about a cruise ship that gets hit by a rogue wave and ends up bottoms up.  The ship flips and most peopel end up dead, however the boat does not immediatly sink.  It floats and a group of survivors decides they can’t wait and they need to find a way out, before it is too late.  In the original there are two groups of traveling survivors, but in this version there is one one wandering band.

Personally I will probably never take a cruise, this movie scared me, but it isn’t the only one.  It made me wonder if there were such things as rogue waves, but then again I worry about giant enhanced sharks, hitting icebergs and the ship splitting in two, and being on a ship full of ghosts that only want to kill me and own my soul.  This movie gives me another reason for not going on a cruise, why go on a ship that has the possibility of flipping upside down if no one is going to think of finding a way to swim out?  I mean there are openings created by the whole accident, so why not try swimming out before the ship sinks?  Maybe that was just me, but I would have thought at least one other person would raise that question.

I thought this was all right, but why remake a movie that was good and still is good to begin with?!  Watching this I felt that hollywood seems to depend too much on special effects and not enough on the development of a character.  Especially of Josh Lucus’s character, Dillion.  He is actually not a great guy and doesn’t want to be held back by a bunch of others yet in the end he risks his life for a few of them, which didn’t make sense to me in regards to how his character was developed.  Also at least two of the characters that seemed important had minor roles and ended up being useless.

I reccomend watchign this movie for some of the special effects.  Every now and then images of the boat underwater are spectacular, and the horror of bodies floating around and the death was wonderfully done.  Yet this movie lacks something, and for me I felt is was the interest in which characters die or live.  There just isn’t enough background for me to care, and honestly I don’t know why I should care who lives or dies.

Rent the original and see Gene Hackman and Sally Field do a great job, then rent this version and realize that not everything is better the second time around.

Saw IV

Posted on 04 May 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Saw IV is rated R for violence and language (pretty much for violence, blood, gore, etc.).  It is an hour and fourty-eight minutes long, and stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor and Scott Patterson.

Saw IV takes up pretty much where the last one left off.  In a dark place where murder happens.  This sequel is focused around a police officer who is too impatient to search and jumps the gun.  He gets to decide who lives and who dies, and who gets help.  He is a rash man, but possibly a good man.  If you have seen the other Saw movies you pretty much know what this one is about, except in this one there really isn’t a jigsaw, because the bad guy is dead and his protege died in Saw III.  Sorry if that is a spoiler.  The question this movie raises is who will take over, and will there be a Saw V?  I sure hope not.

Comparing all of the Saw movies the first two were fun, the first the best because you really had no idea what was going on and it was a surprise.  The second one was a surprise and fun because you didn’t know where it would really go after the first one.  The third one was somewhat fun and interesting, but this one, this one was pretty bad.  I thought that this movie was not well played and the characters really had no point, and there was no reason for me to care about any of them.  I found myself wanting them all to die because all of them bored me.  Even the murders weren’t as inventive as I would have hoped for from a Saw movie.

The most interesting thing about this movie was that all of the people who were trapped went after the other person or people that were trapped with them.  Which is something we didn’t see in the first movies, everyone kind of banded together and worked together to try saving themselves and everyone int he first ones.  However this movie was all over the place with too many characters and it didn’t really focus on just one character enough for me to care about the characters, I wasn’t even sure what was the relationship between some of them or where they came from.  I understood why one was involved because we had seen him before, but all of the others, I was just not sure.

I say skip this movie.  It is too all over the place and really will have you dissappointed that they even made a Saw IV.  Just pretend that Saw III was the last one and maybe you can keep yourself happy with the series of movies.  If you do decide to ignore this review and do watch this don’t say I didn’t warn you, and I feel very sorry for you.

Zombie Strippers

Posted on 24 April 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

This movie is an hour and forty-seven minutes long.  It is rated R for pretty much everything, no wait, I don’t think it had drug usage.  It stars Jenna Jameson and Robert Englund (of Freddy Kruger Fame).

The title says it all.  This movie is about Zombie Strippers.  They don’t start out zombies, and not all of them start out strippers but they both happen.  This movie is about a virus that gets out and infects the locals at an illegal strip club.  Jenna Jameson plays the main and hottest stripper, Robert Englund the club owner, and there are a lot of other people in the cast but not so important.  The virus is spread how it usually is, bites, scratches, all get you infected.  The Army is sent to contain it, or are they?  That is the main question.

This movie really has no point and takes place pretty much in the strip club.  There are a few scenes outside and in a hospital, but all the real action happens in the strip club.  It is not shot with the best special effects, but with a movie named zombie strippers you shouldn’t't expect the best, you should however expect humor, and lots of it.  You will never look at billiard balls the same.  Fun and laughs and lots of female nudity are the staples of this movie.  It has the drippings of a horror movie, lots of gore, pulling off of arms, decomposing females and a decapitated head.

My main problem with this movie was that it took a long time to get to the action.  Too much time was spent on the explanation of why the world had changed, why the army was at the hospital trying to get the zombies and take care of them, and why the zombies had been created in the first place.

If you want a zombie movie that is fun and full of hot, naked girls, then you have to go see this movie.  If you want a serious horror zombie flick, I don’t think I will recommend this movie to you because serious it is not.  In fact the only reason I am putting it in the horror genre is because of all of the gore and disembodied body parts.

Hatchett

Posted on 11 April 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

Unrated this movie has a lot of blood, gore, killing and nudity, so be aware of what you will be seeing.  It is an hour and twenty-four minutes long.  Starring Joel Moore, Deon Richmond, Robert Englund and Kane Hodder.

Deformity takes the stage in this horror flick.  It is about a house in the New Orleans background that houses a man and his deformed son.  There is a fire started by a group of children and the house burns, to the horror of the father, whose son is still inside.  Years later the story is that the ghost of the deformed boy, Victor, haunts the woods killing whomever gets in his way.  A group of unsuspecting people, varied by job and reason for being in the tour boat, fall prey to the horrible monster when their tour boat sinks.  One by one they are horrible mutilated and murdered, until only a few remain standing.

Gore is prominent in this movie, which isn’t as scary as it could have been.  There is a lot of nudity, and some of it made me uncomfortable because it sounded like a guy who was videotaping a girl flashing her breasts was her father.  Turns out he wasn’t but the wording was a little off.  the most interesting spots in this movie were all of the creative death scenes.  A lot of the ways people were killed were inventive and horrible, and the sound effects were fantastic, so you almost cringed yourself when at least one of the victims is crushed.

Dissapointing movie though in the fact that it wasn’t a very scary movie, which wasn’t surprising since many movies that bill themselves as horror movies these days are really not.  While the death scenes were fun and creative, they were the only real things I cared about in this movie (although if you are interested in female anatomy there are breasts aplenty in this flick), and they really weren’t enough to carry this movie on.

If you want to see a movie with a lot of death and some comedic lines, I suggest this movie, but I don’t think this movie will be good for you if you are looking for a horror film.  It has some moments of fear for those who scare easily, but if you love the horror genre and love watching horror films, then you might just want to watch this for the death and gore.

Dead and Breakfast

Posted on 11 April 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

This movie is rated R for violence.  It is an hour and twenty-eight minutes long.  It stars David Carridine, Jeremy Sisto, Ever Carridine, and Portia de Rossi (in a small part).

This movie is about a group of kids traveling down the lonely road ontheir way to a wedding.  Of course they get lost and learn that they won’t be able to make it that night, so they spend the night in a spooky little town in a spooky little Bed and Breakfast with a spooky french chef.  Things go wrong when first the chef is discovered dead and then the owner dies of an assumed heart attack.  There the horror starts.  There is a lot of death and dying, and a ton of comedic lines and turns.  This movie takes an unexpected turn and becomes . . . a zombie movie.  Yes I said it, it is a zombie movie.

Funny is one word that can be used to describe this movie.  It is fantastic, and hilarious.  If you a looking for a horror film, this is not the one for you, but if you are looking for a bloody movie with cute guys and gals and lots of comedy, then this is the movie for you.  It takes several different turns, and some characters die that I wish didn’t have to die, but in the end even their deaths are funny, and fun.  Scary Movie this movie is not, it is just a zombie horror movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously.  There is a scene when one of the main female characters is fighting off zombies in a hallway between two staircases, and the zombies keep coming.  Her line “You’ve got to be kidding me” as each zombie group comes is totally hilarious.

The main thing I didn’t like about this movie was that the reason the people were becoming zombies was a little odd, and didn’t seem as well thought out as it could have been.  That said, it does add to the odd turns that the movie takes since you aren’t exactly expecting what you get.  Plus you have to watch out for the keeper of the town records, she’ll kill you.

If you want a movie that is fun and funny and a little gory watch this one.  If you want a serious horror movie, move along, move along.

50 First Dates

Posted on 03 April 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

This movie is rated PG-13 for sexual humor and drug references.  It is one hour and thirty-nine minutes long.  It stars Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler.

If you are not a fan of Adam Sandler I suggest you stop reading this review right now, since he is the main character of the movie.  This movie is about a woman, Lucy (played by Barrymore), who had a horriffic car accident and doe not remember each new day.  She is stuck in the day of the accident and her father and brother, and well, actually all of her friends, tries to protect her and let her believe she is living that same day over and over.  That is of course until Adam Sandler comes along, falling in love with this woman, and willing to do everything he can to make her fall in love with him to.  Sandler tries each new day to make Barrymore fall in love with him or even just want to date him, with some interesting results.

Besides being a comedy this movie also has some very serious parts, especially when you think about what the movie is about.  A woman in a car accident who can’t remember anything new, and there is an institution for others like her, some worse off.  It does make some fun of people with memory disorders, but not horribly, so don’t be surprised when watching it.

Although I liked this movie and there were several things I probably could have done without.  I mean did we really need another Adam Sandler song?  My say is no, although some of you out there in movie land might like this.  Also if you all remember Sandler and Barrymore played love interests in another movie titled The Wedding Singer which I thought was marginally better.  I liked this movie enough to watch it more than once, I think it might just be because of the character played by Sean Astin, who playes Lucy’s steroid using brother.  His character was very fun and funny, and I wished that he could have had just a little more screen time.

I reccomend this to anyone looking for something a little romantic.  You know one of those nights that you want to watch a romance movie but that your significant other or partner wants a comedy.  The romance nut will like the kissing and the mushy love scenes and the comedy nut will like everything else.

A Christmas Story

Posted on 03 April 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

This movie is rated PG, mostly for some language and sexual humor.  It is an hour and thirty-three minutes long.  It stars Peter Billingsly, Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon.

This movie is one that is usually on during the Christmas season.  It is a comedy about the life and times of a young boy.  The boy wants a red rider BB gun, yet everyone is telling him that he can’t have one because he will shoot his eye out.  The lengths the boy is willing to go through to get the gun is very humerous.  The family is very fun, the mom loves to play with her kids, and the father, well he is your typical 1950’s father.  Two of the best scenes in this movie involve a young boy, a icy day, a pole, and a tongue, another involves the father, a lamp, and a leg.  I am sure if you have seen this movie you remember the scenes I am talking about.  If you haven’t seen it, I don’t want to spoil it for you.

The humor in this movie is timeless, which is one of the reasons that this movie is played pretty much every Christmas.  Not every “Christmas” movie gets played every year, and not many get played every day over and over.  This movie can be watched by anyone ages 8-88 (or older) and could get a laugh from all of them.  The family dinamic is a little odd at times, especially one scene which involves potatoes and a pig noise, but not in a bad way.  It is a disfunctional family, but not an abusive one.

That being said this movie is a little long and tedious at times.  The need for the main character to get a BB gun for Christmas is humerous, but towards the end of the movie the viewer might begin to think that the main character is a tad whiney.  In the end the viewer might also wish that someone would just give him a BB gun to shut him up.

I reccommend this movie for pretty much anyone, and if you haven’t seen it there is no need to wait until Christmas, rent it now and enjoy.

A Mighty WInd

Posted on 03 April 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

This movie is rated PG-13 for sexual situations.  It is an hour and thirty-two minutes long.  It stars a cast of people who are known for several different characters.  Stars like Eugene Levy (American Pie), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice), Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, and Jane Lynch.

This movie is about a folk music concert.  Several of the songs are catchy and it makes the viewer long for the CD’s of the songs, or wish that the groups were actual groups.  The main musicians and the ones that everyone longs to see are Mitch and Mickey played by Levy and O’Hara.  However the problem is that there were problems in the past and Mitch and Mickey are no longer together.  Through many twists and turns the concert is finally brought together, with one final twist, will Mitch and Mickey play together.

This movie is a quiet type of comedy, one that not everyone would understand.  The scenes are funny and the characters are all played really well.  It leaves the viewer laughing and smiling.  The best part of the scenes star Parker Posey and the group she sings with, actually that isn’t true, there are a lot of really good scenes in this movie, I just find that Parker Posey plays her character so well.  This movie does not rely on crude body humor, which is refreshing compared to many of the comedies of today.  The comedy is high-brow.

The one thing that really bothered me about this movie was that is was a little slow at places.  I thought that there were times when it could have moved a little faster or some scenes could have been taken out.  Since this film is shot in a documentary style some of the commentary is a little drab and unneeded.

I reccomend this movie to anyone who wants a comedy that is a little different.  It is a musical comedy and some of the songs will stick with you, so be warned.

Adventures in Babysitting

Posted on 03 April 2008 by Stacy Neuberger

This movie is rated PG-13, mostly for sexual situations.  It is an hour and forty-two minutes long.  It stars Elisabeth Shue, in a role that is probablu one of her most famous roles.

This movie is about a hapless babysitter and the trouble she gets into in a night that is supposed to be just an ordinary babysitting job.  The babysitter, played by Shue, wants just an ordinary babysitting night, with movies and homework, however that is not what she gets.  What she gets is a phone call from her anxious friend, and an adventure she, and the kids she is babysitting, is not exactly ready for.  Throughout the night she loses and finds things, becomes frightened for the kids she is babysitting, and falls in love.

This movie was fun at the time and may still be fun now, depending on what you are looking for in a movie.  If you want a comedy with a lot of body humor then you shouldn’t watch this movie.  The humor in this movie is higher than fart jokes.  It has laughs and romance, which are always good in a comedy.  The youngsters are played wonderfully, especially the little girl who goes around seraching for her hero to save and rescue them, with somewhat surprising results.

One of the things I didn’t really like about this movie was that some of the settings were dark and tried to be more dramitic than they were.  This movie had very little suspense, and really didn’t give you much reason to root for the romance between Shue and her boy love.  There were many times when you look at the movie and ask yourself why they put that in there, but it was fun.

I reccomend this movie to anyone who wants a chuckle, or anyone who wants to be taken back a few years.  The hairstyles and clothes might just be enough for the chuckle.
