The Longshots

Posted on 22 August 2008 by pippy

Ready set hike! This movie starring Ice Cube and Keke Palmer will have you running for the ball!

The story starts of in an old town in Minen Illinois where an alcoholic man is forced to watch his niece (Palmer) when the mom has to take longer shifts at work. Palmer’s character is a loner who reads constantly and does not fit in, but when she tries the other kids make fun of her. All that changes when her uncle (Cube) takes her to a park where football is the only game the town can hold onto. Palmer’s character (Plummer) becomes the first girl in an all boys league.

There were some discriminatory remarks in this movie; however, the issue was not a huge part in the movie’s game. There was sexism of having a girl play in an all boys team. Girls can’t play football, oh yes they can. One girl took the whole team of boys and made them into champions along with the help of a determined coach when his niece’s father walks out on her.

Family is a controversial issue, for example, when Plummer’s dad tried to come back into her life, it is hard for her to accept the fact that he just doesn’t want to be in her life. At the big game, they lost the game, but they won something great coming home. The town acts as one big family, black and white. They pitch on to restore the town to its natural beauty in the times when everything was lost.

This movie is family friendly and if you enjoy football this movie is cool and fly high. Make sure you are a fan of Beyonce, Tyra and Gracy Brown. If you see the movie you’ll know what I mean :)

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Posted on 15 August 2008 by pippy

Red, blue, action! This animated movie will have you whooping and cheering and have you hanging for more.

The story starts of when Jaba’s son is kidnapped from him and he wants the Jedi knights to retrieve them. Jaba asks the council who include Yoda and Samuel L. Jackson’s character for Obi Wan and Anakin Skywalker. In the midst of it all cont Doku is up to his evil schemes again. He tries to tell Jaba that the Jedi has kidnapped Jaba’s son from the hut and they are coming for him next. Star War fans will want to know more when they see this film! If you have seen all Star Wars films it will make sense in what is going on. The whole story line is making sure that the Jedi can use the Hut’s routes to help the outer rims who are at war. Of course, Obi Wan and Anakin Skywalker are the two main stars of the movie. Anakin is also training his youngling who is almost as clever as he is. When they both have each other’s backs they make quite a team.

I am not a Star Wars fanatic but I do like the story line. This film is very good for those who are not into the whole Star Wars frenzy. I liked this movie, it had action at every turn. I liked the suspense about who was the good side and bad side and who was going to win. Star Wars fans will throughly enjoy this movie. This movie will hopefully go into the #1 spot in the top box office and knock out Dark Knight. No offense, Batman but we know you rock but let another movie have its share in the game huh? The adventure in this movie was quite fun to see, ships crash landing, Jedi fights including the one between Anakin and Doku. However, the movie makes references to the other star wars films for example when Doku tells Anakin about his past. Well, you should see the other movies and then you will be like, “Oh yes, I remember.”

Overall, this movie has action and fun all over it. May the force be with you as you enjoy the red and blue laser adventure!

Pineapple Express

Posted on 06 August 2008 by pippy

Thug Life! This action comedy flick staring Seth Rogen and James Franco will have you as high as a kite. Stealing police cars, blowing up factories and getting high makes this movie a high time fun film.

The story starts out when Dale Denten (Rogen) is working on his job by sending out supenas to people who do not want it. From there he sees his high school girlfriend and she wants him to meet her parents. Rogen is oblivious to all around him because he is smoking chronic the entire time. When he goes to his “dealer,” Saul (Franco) Dale (Rogen) discovers that Saul has hit the jackpot when he gives him the rarest joint called “Pineapple Express.” When Dale leaves he is on his way to see his girlfriend, but he parks over to take a hit and when he does, he finds himself in a mess when a police officer and a man in a robe (Gary Cole), Dale finds himself on a high adventure with Saul (Franco).

This movie was very funny. Throughout the two main characters are smoking non stop which might send a bad message to the teen youth for illegal purposes of getting high.  However, the sardonic Dale realizes his life is at stake he tries to stop smoking and get even with these thugs. Hilarious part when Franco helping Dale escape in a police car chase, Franco gets his foot stuck in the window, trying to see because he spilled a drink on the window and couldn’t see anything because Rogen’s character said, “Isn’t that what they do in the movies?”

It wasn’t too violent, yes there were explosing machines and cars, but it wasn’t as bloody as I thought it would be. It had funny scenes and touching moments but it seemed rather homosexual; even though both men are straight, it helped them escape the bad guys. But most of the movie they were getting high and when they ecounter high school kids they ask them to pay them for the stuff that they get. In the movie getting high made them seem like they knew what they were doing, so it made them seem intellegent. That was funny!

Overall this chronic movie will make you high wih laughter! Go see it!

The Mummy 3

Posted on 01 August 2008 by pippy

Not as good as the first two, but quite enjoyable. This movie stars Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello who play two retired parents and are no longer mummy hunting. Action, romance and quite a few sparks along makes this movie interesting.

The story goes when in the beginning when the emporer is imprisoned when a woman who loves his trusted adviser leaves the emporer to help save China. Several years later, Alex O Connell, son of Rick and Eve goes down on a dig to China after he drops out of college. Alex has been visiting his uncle John who has his own night club. Back in England, a mysterious man comes to Rick and Eve to put the heart back into China. But little do they know that they are in trouble when a friend betrays them. The O Connels along with John are tricked into awaken the emporer and are in a flight to save the world.

The story itself was quite an adventure and it was not as exciting as the first two films. No offense Maria, but Rachel makes a good Eve following her from the first two mummy’s. I missed that she was not in the third one because it would have been like the first two, but in China rather than Egypt. Brendan’s acting was a little more dadish and not such an action guy. The acting overall was fun to see. Jet Li still has it with his kung fu and acting talents. I was surprised to see the his enemy from Romeo Must Die plays his enemy yet again in this movie. The newcomer who plays Alex did extremely well for his film debut. Uncle John was funny, however his humor fell when he did not crack as much jokes.

The direction took a different turn from Egypt to China.  The first two mummy’s took place in Egypt which has cool artifacts and gods. I liked the whole Egyptian theme where the acting and the jokes were funny and cool. The whole China thing was different; but the only thing that was cool was the mummy turning into a dragon and the beast thing along with the abdominal snowmen who turned out to be on the good guys side, which when the previews were out makes you think they were the bad guys. Well I thought it was kinda cool that the snowmen came to help them. Another interesting thing was the whole immortality power to live forever and gaining the power to take over the world. The fighting scenes were better in the first two mummy’s where there was a book to destroy the mummy rather than a knife to kill him off by stabbing him in the heart. However, being in China was cool to see some of the cultural aspects like Chinese New Year and the general betraying the king.

Overall, this movie was good, but not as excellent as the first two mummy’s. The humor was funny but lacking in the right places.  The acting was good but could have been better and more actiony. I miss Rachel being Eve and Brendan was a dadish figure in the movie rather than an action figure. However, there were some memorable parts and some references to the first two mummy’s. “You only put down one mummy dad.” “Yeah, same mummy twice.” This line was very memorable and funny for the first two mummy’s were better. Yet, this movie will still make it into box office with a very negative aspect.

Batman: The Dark Knight

Posted on 18 July 2008 by pippy

The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Maggie Gyllenhaal whose Cape Crusader is not wanting to reveal himself to the City of Gotham, but is the City ready for the Dark Knight.

The story line was confusing. All I know is that the Joker (Ledger) kills innocent people and the Batman (Bale) has to stop him before he does anymore damage. In the middle is Kent a lawyer who wins the affection of Rachel.(Gyllenhaal) Kent puts most of the criminals in jail by winning a court case. However, things get more serous when the bad guys look to a freak for help. The Joker doesn’t always tick to the plan and he makes a wondeful mess for everyone. The police in charge (Oldman) works with Batman to help catch this monstrous clown, but will Batman prevail? The story continues to get even more twisted when the good guys go bad.

The movies direction was very confusing. One minute you think the Joker is trying to be helpful but then he is bad. Ledger’s acting skills was very pleasing, but he didn’t get the final word. Was he caught or did he escape. We assume he was caught, but he always comes up with something clever. Another view is that Gary Oldman’s role was very disappointing. “So you came back from the dead?” Hmm…isn’t that Batman’s role? Batman always lives.

I loved the way the Joker came up with his tactics of killings. Ledger took things to a whole new level. I love the line when he says, “Why so serious?” Ledger tricks half the City by plotting destuctive mechanisms to make Batman realize what he is really after. Ledger as Joker also plays well when he goes after the heart. But why the good guy goes bad, makes one realize that Kent’s line was right, “You die to be a hero, or you can live long enough to become the villian.” Hmm….I like this quote it had meaning to it.

Overall this movie was pretty good. There were positive and negative things about the movie which gives you some mixed feelings. It was like this because this was Ledger’s last movie :( However, when you look into the moonlight you see a Dark Knight.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Posted on 11 July 2008 by pippy

Journey to the Center of the Earth starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutchison will take you for a ride, literally. This 3-D movie is packed with adventure and great fun for anyone!

The story begins when a professor has to watch his nephew who just lost his father. Brendan takes Josh to Iceland so they can do some field lab work, but when they meet a woman who guides them into the mountain for a little research, they get more than a bargain. Soon, the group find themselves stuck in cave and needing to get out with the little time they have left. Along the way, the trio sees things that are out of the ordinary and make exciting finds and also might I add get into a little trouble and romance.

The 3-D effects were really cool. I liked how things flew at me and made the movie more fascinating. The 3-D affects made you want to go back and re-read the book. The 3-D effects also had some fun surprises in them! The coolest part of the movie was seeing the center of the earth itself, is that how it really looks like, Jules Verne had quite an imagination.

However, the beginning was a bit confusing, leading into the story itself took a while. Things eventually picked up when the uncle and nephew follow the guide into exciting heights. In the beginning, the scenes made you a little sick for it it was going too fast. The rest of the movie was fun to watch and you felt like you were going on a rollercoaster the entire movie.

Overall, this action packed adventure will take you on a ride to the center of the Earth. It makes you wonder if you can go to the center of the earth and survive!

Hancock

Posted on 03 July 2008 by pippy

Will Smith still has it! Hancock stars Will Smith and Charlize Theron in an action film. This movie will fly you right up to the sky!

Will Smith stars as Hancock a superhero who needs an attitude adjustment and who needs to stop drinking. The town is tired of picking up the damages rather than having a superhero who does his duty properly. But this hero has a makeover when he saves a man who has a charming wife (Charlize Theron) who hides more than Hancock knows.

The camera was shaking in the beginning of the movie. The wife’s husband’s face was shaking when he was giving a presentation that made you go dizzy. The camera soon picked up when the action started happeneing.

The story had romance but it wasn’t a big deal. When Hancock falls for Ray’s wife, he finds that he would rather not hurt his friend. The wife however, knows more about Hancock than her own husband. I liked that they didn’t have an affair because it wouldn’t have been the way it ended.

Overall, this movie is a must see and Will Smith still has acting skills. Will and Charlize have a good throw down by the end of it all.

Wanted

Posted on 28 June 2008 by pippy

This movie stars James Mcavoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. This action packed film will take you on  a ride of your life. The drama of the movie is the twist in the story line.

The movie starts off with James as a low life who tried to figure out who he is. His character becomes messed up wehn he flies off with Angelina Jolie in a shooting spree. He figures out who he is through brutal bloody training when Morgan’s character takes him in. There is a twist when he finds out who the real killers are. However, everyone else has a flaw in the plan.

The acting and special affects were quite maginficent. I was amazed at how they learned to curve a bullet and do some of the stunts make it look so real. James and Angelina did acting quite well. James has really grown from his role in Penelope and Becoming Jane. Never will Angelina Jolie have a Legally Blonde roll. Her physique is always going to be action packed which makes her unique acting differen from everyone else.

The blood was a little too much. James’s character being hit so many times and his face brusied. When Angelina Jolie gave mouth to mouth to the Russian it was gross for she was eating his blood. Yuck!

Overall, the movie was really good and the action great. I really liked it even though there was a lot of blood. I would love to see this movie again.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Posted on 23 May 2008 by pippy

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets comes back to fight an evil doing in school. The trio Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have another adventure in Hogwarts. This fantasy movie will take you on a wild ride.

An evil has plagued the school of its students. It is up to Harry and his friends to find out who is plotting these evil schemes. Harry finds himself facing the idiotic but handsome Gilderoy Lockhart, Defense Aganist the Dark Arts teacher. Snape has yet to prove that he is still watching Harry for the “good” against Lord Voldemort. The funniest scenes are where Ron says, “Why follow the spiders, why not foloow the butterflies.” Harry and Ron without Hermione’s help get themselves into a mess when they take Hagrid’s advice. Harry soon finds the meaning of the Chamber of Secrets when he learns of his ability to speak Parseltounge (snake language) to open the Chamber. Harry finds himself in a position where his friends are for him.

The director made it flow all together. The scenes were not choppy and went into parts. For example, the movie followed the books overall in the beginning where Harry is in his aunts and uncles house and then he gets svaed by his friend Ron Weasley. Overall, the scenes had a great flow through them.

If this movie was not great I would not have watched it 500 times. Yes I counted, I wasted my freshman summer watching Harry Potter and having my mom yell at me to get off. This movie had twists and turns and you can follow Harry through his adventures. I think Daniel Radcliffe will continue to grow more and more.

Prince Caspian

Posted on 22 May 2008 by pippy

Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian stars William Moseley and Ben Barnes in another fantasy sequel to the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  This fantasy film takes you on a ride of your life.

The story starts out in Narnia when a child is born and Prince Caspian leaves before he is killed by his greedy uncle who wants to take over the throne. His mentore gives him a horn in which he blows before going into darkness. The four Pensieve children are waiting to go to their new home in England when the train roles by and explodes leaving them to enter the world of Narnia. Little do they know a war is stirring in Narnia against Narnians and Telmarines.

The direction of the film had a funny aspect to it. For example, jokes were made when Caspian encounters a talking badger. The badger replies, “What you’ve never seena  badger before?” Caspian is shocked to find that badgers could talk.

The movie itself was had the two actors competing against each other. For example, hot headed Peter wanted to lead everyone into battle while Caspian suggested that they wait to strategize. Peter looses his cool and draws his sword out. When all goes wrong for Peter; he tries to blame Caspian and the two end up sword fighting. Aslan (the Lion) was meant to represent Jesus Christ. The bibliogical aspect made it seem a tad boring but was picked up when the fighting scenes came on.

Overall, this movie is funny and dark and quite exciting when you have two hot actors battling it out for the attention. The four small children no longer small will be the next big hit after Harry Potter series.
