Back to the Future Pt. 2

Posted on 09 April 2008 by candicedice

Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox as Marty Mcfly and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown is simple a great sequel. The movie starts off right were the first one left off only this time instead of going back in time the two must go to the future.

In the first Back to the Future film Marty had to make sure his parents got together to ensure that he existed in the future in this film Marty has to go to the future to make sure his son doesn’t go to jail. Within the first roughly half an hour mission accomplished however, the menacing Biff Tannen makes things a little difficult. Marty notices a novelty store that has an almanac containing the results of every sporting event from the past 50 years. Biff gets his hands on the book and goes back in time thus creating an alternate 1985 where he is a rich man as a result of the almanac. A much darker 1985 so Marty and Doc have to go back to 1955 to get the almanac back to set things straight. Everything is back to normal when a lightening storm comes along and Marty is stuck in 1955 thus setting the stage for the third installment in the three part series.

I love this movie one because it’s a slice of the 80s personified and the fact that it plays a big part in my childhood. I hadn’t watched this movie in years so it felt like watching it again for the first time. I love how Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis envision the future. I guess in seven years we’ll be driving cars,  going to see Saws 19, while our food pops up from a counter in a nostalgic cafe, but everything will still be in deglo. I also got a kick out of the Cubs winning the World Series against Miami (which was interesting since Florida baseball is not very popular)  My favorite part of this movie is the story I love how it’s much darker and how the neighborhood that was once viewed to be a safe cosy place for families is now a rough neighborhood.  I also love how Marty and Doc run into one another while trying to get the book back these  scenes are well done.

Overall I enjoyed this movie and I would recommend seeing it or simple going back and watching it again. The movie is definitely worth watching over and over again.

No Country For Old Men (2007)

Posted on 22 March 2008 by candicedice

The Coen Brother have done it again with a story that’s both confusing and interesting with a two hour long film with murder and an air gun.

The story is about a Texas hunter Llewelyn Moss played by  Josh Brolin who discover several dead bodies, and bed full of heroin in the back of a truck and $2 million under a tree.  Anton Chigurn played by Javier Barden is a psychopathic killer who is looking for the money and won’t stop at any expense. Tommy Lee Jones’ character is quiet possible the most interesting character because his character help explain the title of the film. Lee’s character Ed Tom Bell is an old sheriff near retirement; the character explains how old men simply can’t catch the young criminals because times have changed. In the end Ed Tom Bell retires, Llewelyn Moss gets shot in a hotel room and Anton Chigurn literally walks away. What makes this movie confusing is that in classic Coen Brother’s fashion the audience is left with several question. What happened to the money and What happens to Anton, what happens to the people who killed Llewelyn Moss and did Anton really kill Llewelyn wife?

I enjoyed this movie however I felt confused and somewhat lost this is definitely a movie that requires one full and undivided attention. The movie also had some surprising death scenes where men where shot both in the head at close range and shot in the neck. Blood doesn’t bother me, but it may others so if you haven’t seen this film consider this a warning.  Another element that I enjoy was some of the shot in particular the opening shot of the dark night and mountains in the background. I felt this was a great opener because it let the audience know that this wasn’t going to be a happy ending kind of movie. Another shot I enjoyed was when Llewlyn’s character when back to the scene of the shot out to bring the man some water. The truck was on top of a hill with a some source of light around the truck. The shot was  a wide angle long shot and it came out nicely.

I would definitely recommend seeing this film after seeing the film I can see why the academy gave the film plenty of praise.

The Wedding Singer (1998)

Posted on 19 March 2008 by candicedice

Take great music, great clothing, 90 minutes of pop cultures refences from a truely great decade the 1980s and one of the coolest cameos of all time from Billy Idol  and you have Frank Coraci’s the Wedding Singer.

The Wedding Singer is a story set in Ridgefield, Ill. in 1985.  The movie follows Robbie Hart played by Adam Sandler and Julia Sullivan played by Drew Barrymore and there story of love.  The film starts off with a fun scene at a wedding with Julia serving fish and prime rib and Robbie singing on stage. The two meet and they learn that the both of them have other love interests. Robbie is engaged to a women who ends up leaving him at the alter.  While Julia simply relizes she not in love with Glen, but she’s in love with Robbie.  In the end the two end up together and  they get married.

What makes the Wedding Singer worth watching you may ask? Well it’s the characters in the first scene the audience is introducted to a character named George played by Alexis Arquette this character is in the same band as Robbie and is dressed like Boy George from  Culture Club and the only song he can sing is “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?” Another character that bring several laughs to several scenes is Robbies best friend Sammy. The clothing that he wears simply brings back  so many memories from the 80s. Christine Taylor’s character Holly Sullivan looks like Maddona and it’s great the last character that completes the film is Glen the man who is obsessed with the television show ”Miami Vice” everything from the cloths that he wears to the music that he listens to in his Delorin.

The Wedding Singer is a fun comedy with a great soundtrack and a great movie story it’s the kind of movie that you can watch over and over and not get tired of it.

The Simpson Movie

Posted on 05 March 2008 by candicedice

The long running sitcom The Simpson hit theaters last summer. The show has been on-air for 17 seasons and just now the creaters were able to release a feature length film. We all know the characters of the film Bart, Homer, Lisa, Marg, and Maggie. The story is addresses the pollution problem in the Springfield lake; everyhing is fine till Homer dumps some waste into the river making the river a hazard, so the city is closer off in a giant bubble,  the family escapes to Alaska for an attempt at a new start.  Life is fine for the Simpson till they relize they need to save their city.  Needless to say the family saves Springfield and all is right with the world.

The movie is worth watching, but I couldn’t get over the feeling that this was an extended episode and not a full length film. There are several jokes and depite the need for things to push the envelope the film delightfully doesn’t do so.  This is also a movie that you can enjoy with your child.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Posted on 05 March 2008 by candicedice

A John Hughes classic features Mathew Broderick as Ferris Bueller, Alan Ruck as Cameron Frye and Mia Sara as Samon. The movie is a story of a high school senior who is larger then life who doesn’t take life too seriously. Ferris Bueller fakes an illness to have the day off of school and he takes advange of the day. The three main characters travel to Chicago and see the city all while trying to avoid being caught by Ferris’ family and high school principal Edward Rooney.

This film is great fun and is also a coming of age story for the three main characters especially Cameron Frye’s character. The movie has one memorable catch phrase “Life moves pretty fast if you don’t stop and look around once an awhile you could miss it.” The movie also feature a small part played by an unknown actor (at the time) Charlie Sheen.

The film has a great soundtrack and has several interesting a shots one particular shot is the scene in the musuem then Cameron stares at a famous painting and the camera zooming closer and closer into the painting.

I would definetly recommend seeing this movie over and over. I’ve seen this film several times and each time it gets better.

American Gangster

Posted on 04 February 2008 by candicedice

It’s hard to believe it, but the Oscar’s are just around the corner and one movie that has receiver some of the buzz is an American Gangster starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. The movie also has supporting roles from Cuba Gooding Jr., rapper T.I. and Common. The film is also based on a true story and has one of the most intense opening scenes I’ve seen in a while. The story begins with  Frank Lucas(Washington) as a driver for a powerful gangster shortly after this character appears he passes on leaving Frank Lucas with a decision to make. Make his own money or work for someone else? Needless to say Frank Lucas becomes a powerful gangster by smuggling heroin into the United States during the Vietnam War in coffins.

I thought this movie was a little long there were several scenes that could have been cut out, I also had a problem with the female roll in this film. If a women wasn’t a prostitute then she was completely naked packaging the drugs. It was just a little too much. I was also disappointed with the soundtrack during the 70s some of the best music ever made was produced, but the soundtrack just didn’t have any spark to help with the plot.

Despite my disappointment with the soundtrack and the female role I would still definitely recommend seeing this movie the plot is very interesting and the character of Frank Lucas is both interesting and well acted.  The character of Detective Richie Roberts is also interesting because the audience learns that he’s no angel by being a not so perfect husband and father, but he’s an honest cop.

Shrek

Posted on 01 February 2008 by candicedice

This movie is great for all ages it’s an animated cartoon featuring the voices of Mike Meyers as Shrek,  Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Prince Fiona, and John Lithkow as Lord Farquad. The movie follows Shrek as he has been order to rescue the princess who is trapped in a castle guarded by a fire breathing dragon. The movie takes nearly every fair tale and finds the funny side of each one. This movie is also great because in several scene there are jokes that adults will understand that your seven year old won’t even catch.

The movie is all about a journey of friendship and eventually love showing that love can happen with anyone no matter what they look like. The writers of this movie do a great job in making the story not seem overwhelming or sappy like that of most love story. The two characters that fall in love are of course Shrek and Princess Fiona (who we later find out has been cursed as is actually an ogre.)  This is also a movie that has several pop culture references leaving the audience wanting to see the film again just to catch all of the references.

This is simple a great story with great animation that proves you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a cartoon.
