Drag Me To Hell (2009)

Directed By: Sam Raimi

99 Minutes

Sam Raimi (Evil Dead Trilogy, Spider-Man Trilogy) returns to his roots with this Horror/ Black Comedy known as Drag Me To Hell. Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is a loan officer aspiring for a promotion. Her boss instructs her to go to an elderly woman’s home and evict her. The woman then curses Christine for disrespecting her. Christine deals with many horrible things haunting her. She tries desperately to remove the curse. Justin Long costars as her sweetheart boyfriend with a family that disproves of Christine.

This film packs a reasonable amount of thrills. It manages to make a handkerchief menacingly. The curse leads to several horrifying images that are as humorous as they are terrifying. The film however doesn’t manage to be as frightening as the images of the first two Evil Dead movies. It also doesn’t pack the laughs as much as the second to Evil Dead movies. This is more of Evil Dead lite.

This is one for classic Raimi fans. Alison Lohman feels exactly like Bruce Campbell if he was girl in her 20’s. She is fun and strong. She deals with everything that gets thrown at her with a psychotic amount of stability. She is very likable. Her scenes with Justin Long are also very sweet. They almost feel like they come from a decent romantic comedy. This comes as a relief as opposed to the usual horror couple of man makes fun of girlfriend and then they bone. These are sweet and wholesome people which makes the final moments just as powerful.

This is far from Raimi’s best film. It’s also far from his weakest. It’s a solid horror flick. It pushes the PG-13 a bit, but still feels like its playing it safe. It is nowhere as gory as Evil Dead II. But the acting is solid and there are plenty of laughs. This is one of the better horror movies of the 21st century.

I’d Also Recommend:

-Evil Dead II

-Army of Darkness

-Poltergeist
